This week, we look ahead to the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) Vanessa Kerry, founder of Seed Global Health, welcomes the news of a first-ever “climate day” and argues that leaders have a historic opportunity to climate change’s effects on health—but only if their efforts are accompanied by a commitment to end a pattern of expedient and poor development choices.
We also commemorated World No Tobacco Day this week with two articles from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. The first calls for governments to proactively approach to help farmers transition from tobacco agriculture to other crops and to promote food security and a more resilient agriculture system. The second piece examines whether biomarker data and mobile app surveys could be the solution for a long-standing problem in tobacco use surveillance: teenagers reluctant to admit to risky behaviors.
