Fleeing Ukraine, Calling Out New CDC COVID-19 Guidance, Remembering Paul Farmer
January 16, 2025 Better health begins with ideas
Editors' Note More than one million people have fled Ukraine after Russia invaded the east European country a week ago. This week, we look at the health situation in Ukraine, the humanitarian support being offered, and how our readers and others can help. Another piece on Ukraine addresses menstrual health for women in emergency situations. A Council on Foreign Relations colleague writes about the rise in antisemitism and the danger it poses for health.
Two physicians respond to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines on COVID-19 masking, saying they put frontline workers at risk. Our next article examines the links between redlining and other discriminatory housing practices and higher rates of asthma among Black Americans. We conclude with a tribute to Paul Farmer, who proved that you are never too young to be a global health leader. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he was instrumental in establishing the Duke Global Health Institute, and fresh out of medical school in Boston, he cofounded Partners in Health.
