Better health begins with ideas |
This week, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made headlines when she visited Taiwan, a move that riled Chinese government officials. Our first set of authors unpack how mainland China and Taiwan's long and complex history have affected Taiwan's participation in global health. Our next two pieces shift to the sub-Saharan African region. In Kenya, pregnancy-related deaths have not declined for over twenty years, and in Uganda, the hefty price tag of education is slowing the recovery from a nearly two-year closure of schools due to COVID-19.
Zooming out from the country-level, our next author explains why regulation is not the answer to "gray speech," the form of online disinformation that is dissolving trust in health institutions around the world. Next, a lawyer from Mexico dissects how U.S. manufactured guns are fueling Mexican cartels' drug empires. Our last set of authors argues that more attention should to be paid to the complex intersection of climate change, global health security, and surgery.
