As the United States crosses the threshold of one million confirmed deaths from the pandemic, we share an update to one of our most read pieces, "Just How Do Deaths Due to COVID-19 Stack Up?" which features the most recent data on the countries where COVID-19 is a leading killer.
A second article assesses the gender pay gap, which yawns even wider than most realize, says the next author, arguing that current unpaid care provided by women around the globe needs to count toward an economy for health. David P. Fidler, the editor of Think Global Health's column on U.S. foreign policy and global health, has two pieces this week. The first questions whether the pandemic will produce the alignment needed between domestic politics and foreign policy to revitalize U.S. global health programs. In his second piece, Fidler examines the health effects of the U.S. response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Also about Ukraine, another piece looks at how the war is keeping lifesaving medication from people living with HIV and why the country's recent successes at quelling HIV could backpedal. A final contribution in our Young Voices in Global Health series gives an overview of China's efforts to reduce a lung disease that has plagued its workers for decades.
As always, thank you for reading, and be well. —Thomas J. Bollyky and Mary Brophy Marcus, Editors
