Wildfires, Saving Our Mothers, and Children's Chemotherapy

June 16, 2023

Editor's Note

Last week, smoke from Canada's wildfires swept into the northeastern United States, darkening skies and fouling the air quality for millions of people. This week, Professor Michael Brauer explores the increasing link between wildfires and  climate change and the ways communities should learn to adapt.

Turning to women's health, our next piece is from a group of India-based authors and examines the way perinatal depression is overlooked or dismissed in many low-and middle-income countries, including India.

Women in low-income nations are also at a higher risk of burns due to factors such as open-flame cooking, loose clothing, and intentional burn attacks. The lack of access to timely and appropriate care worsens their situation, but our next article describes the new efforts underway to introduce better care and prevention strategies.

Last, a pediatric oncologist from Nigeria describes the heartbreak and challenges many children face in accessing chemotherapy in her country.

As always, thank you for reading. —Thomas J. Bollyky, Editor
