Better health begins with ideas |
Months after being discovered in a lab in Botswana, omicron is now the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United States and has been detected in at least 185 other countries. Our first author, CFR Senior Fellow and former U.S. Ambassador to Botswana Michelle Gavin, describes how Botswana, which is typically not seen as a center for cutting-edge medical research, was able to isolate omicron before anyplace else. Next, Professor Ali Mokdad from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation answers questions on this latest variant. Our third article advocates for India's community health workers, who have taken a front seat in mitigating COVID transmission across the country's rural communities.
Our fourth piece examines "the epidemic of proposals" for U.S. domestic and international institutional reform that the pandemic has spurred and their prospects of success. Another contributor remembers her friend, Paul Farmer, and the ways he transformed global health through teamwork. Wrapping up the week, we include some favorite podcasts to keep you involved with global health on the go.
We're delighted to announce that we have been nominated for a Webby Award for the second consecutive year! We thank you for your support and encourage you to vote for Think Global Health in this year's Webby Awards. Stay healthy. —Thomas J. Bollyky and Mary Brophy Marcus, Editors
