Better health begins with ideas |
Happy Earth Day! This year, according to EarthDay.org, we need to "act [boldly], innovate [broadly], and implement [equitably]" to preserve and protect our planet, health, and livelihoods. This week's newsletter begins with a piece on why India's climate adaptation plan for health should reflect regional and national needs. Another piece looks at the rise of infectious diseases during war, due to disrupted water and sanitation systems, among other factors, and how the window to prevent a resurgence of diseases in Ukraine is narrowing. A slideshow looks at the health implications of plastic waste. The next article examines the health links for climate change from a different angle: medical waste and the emissions it produces.
Experts ask whether Ukraine is a turning point for finally mobilizing international action to prevent, stop, and increase accountability for war crimes committed against health institutions and personnel. The last article aims to keep global leaders focused on addressing vaccine inequity by speaking directly to high-income countries that need to take responsibility for COVID-19 failures.
